On Saturday, April 18th, the Okauchee Fishing Club, will be holding a one day “Kids Learn to Fish” program under the supervision of the WDNR. Our club will be at the Brown Deer Park boat house from 9am to 2pm. Each child will attend a brief 20-minute class covering fishing safety, types of Wisconsin fish, baits, knot tying and more. Each child attending the class will earn a frameable WDNR certificate and a chance to win a new rod and reel and other prizes. In addition, we will be giving away several special prizes including medals for catching a fish, special “fish towels” where the kids can imprint their own fish towel and take it home, a practice casting game, a place to learn to tie knots and much more. We will again be serving free hot-dogs, chips, and a juice drink.
In addition, if they are under the age of 15, they will get the chance to catch a fish (typically trout) in the stocked Brown Deer Park pond under the guidance of one of our club members. If they catch a fish, they will be asked if they want to keep or release it. If they say “Keep” then we will clean and cook the fish while they watch. Club rods, reels, and bait will be provided for the kids to use. There will be Club Instructors at the water’s edge to assist with rebaiting, tying knots, reloading bait etc. It’s a great time for all. This is a rain or shine event, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
